OVERSIZED

Oversized ScarfFor once I’m not talking about me. Being oversized, that is. It feels so good to be back in my regular jeans. Also to be able to bend down and get back up on my own is a huge plus! But anyway. It was 50 degrees in the city on Sunday and Isla is finally starting to feel better (Theo is still fighting a bit of a cough) so we ventured out for a walk and some coffee. Isla stopped to put Lightening McQueen stickers all over her boots, naturally, and we managed to take a few pictures since it’s been a while since I’ve shared an outfit.

I bought these skinny jeans from Zara the other day for only $35 and I’m thinking about going back for more in other colors. They’re long one me (surprise, surprise) but they’re ridiculously forgiving and comfortable without the sag. When it comes to jeans, it doesn’t get much better than that! Oh, and did you hear Zara has a maternity section now? Of course, now that I don’t need it. I guess I have to get pregnant again. I KID, I KID! For now. Now let us not forget the purpose of this post — the oversized scarf, my Christmas gift from 2014. It’s still one of my favorites for keeping warm around the house and while out and about. Unfortunately, my friend Jaclyn didn’t make any new ones this year (hint, hint for next year?!), but I’ve linked to some similar ones I like below.

winter whites

winter whites | really risaThis was probably not the smartest outfit for a person with an insane toddler who spends her days flinging food around like it’s a contest to see who can be the messiest baby in the world. But whatever. I wasn’t so sure about this sweater when it arrived. It’s cropped and without a shirt underneath there is some major bellybutton showing, which is just not my thing. I got it on super sale though so flowy blouses and denim shirts it is. We took these pictures on a rare 40-degree day, which was kind of amazing. I love a good snowstorm, but days like this remind me of why I prefer every other season in the city. And on that note, happy March!winter whites | really risa winter whites | really risa winter whites | really risa winter whites | really risa

because i don’t want to wear tights

jeans not tights | really risaThis is my first winter without a job, which means I don’t have to wear tights if I don’t want. And I really don’t want to. I have been staring at this dress in my closet trying to figure out ways to wear it sans tights for a while though, so I threw it on over my favorite jeans and added a big, cozy sweater because it’s freezing outside and inside and everywhere. Also, I managed to find time to paint my nails for the second time since having a child. And by “managed to find time” I mean we didn’t leave the house all weekend (except for coffee and to take these pictures) and I’m going batshit crazy so I painted my nails. Either way … progress.

black is best

vegan leather lapel blazer

I have a friend who wears black almost every day. I used to get on her case about adding a little more color to her closet, an idea she resisted wholeheartedly. Now I’m thinking she has the right idea. Maybe it’s this dreary, snow-less, freezing winter we’re having or maybe it’s all the food Isla throws at me or maybe I’m just having a New York moment, but I’ve been drawn to lots and lots of black lately. I bought this faux leather lapel blazer when I was pregnant and wore it constantly. It helped me feel a little less massive and put together, even though it came nowhere near covering my protruding belly. Now it’s a staple. I love that it works over a fancy dress (not that I ever have a reason to wear one) or a pair of ripped jeans. It’s not nearly warm enough to be standing on the street in winter posing for blog photos though. Even Isla, who was protected in her stroller by a wind cover, thought I was nuts.

an oversized scarf + a new hat, finally

Acacia scarf + ASOS jatMy husband — sorry, I mean Santa —  knows me so well. Or he clicks the links I send him. Either way, I was thrilled to find this beautiful scarf and a new, black hat under the tree on Christmas morning. Now I can stop wearing my “Indiana Jones hat” every second of every day (that’s what one of our neighbors calls it when he sees me out and about.). I still love my Indy hat, but one does need a bit of variety, no? The scarf is made by my blogger friend, Jaclyn, and her husband. They own an Etsy shop called Acacia and they specialize in these gorgeous, oversized, flannel scarves. It’s so big and soft I’ve been using it as a blanket in the living room since Christmas morning. I’ve been shopping for a big, warm scarf for a while and the colors in this one are beyond anything I’ve seen. You can bet I’ll be wrapped up in this beauty right up until summer!

In unrelated news, I hope you had a wonderful New Year! We celebrated with a low-key dinner at home on NYE (ahem, I fell asleep at 9 p.m.), a fun New Year’s Day out and about party hopping, a first birthday celebration just the three of us on Isla’s birthday and rounded out the weekend with her final first birthday party with friends, which you might have read about earlier this week. Needless to say, it’s been a crazy end to one year and start to another. Now I’m looking forward to getting back into a routine and seeing what 2015 brings!
