Love Me sign on the product stand outside The Body Shop Pulse Boutique at the KOP Mall

Can you remember that last time you visited The Body Shop? Before last Saturday, I admit, I couldn’t. When I was invited to the grand opening of its new Pulse Boutique in the King of Prussia Mall by my blogger friend Jessie, of Trend Hungry, I grabbed my girlfriend Meghan and we headed out for an afternoon of pampering. Turns out I really really like this new shop’s products and its philosophy.

The Body Shop wall of Community Fair Trade

The Body Shop has undergone somewhat of a rebranding and the thing that stuck out for me is its priorities: no animal testing (and no beetle shells in their eye shadow, as Jessie pointed out), fair trade (the pictures above are hanging on the wall in the store and feature the farmers and workers across the globe who are making the ingredients for their products … and getting a livable wage for it!), activating the self-esteem of women in shelters all over the world, and fighting against domestic violence and the “taboos” surrounding AIDS and HIV, among others.

I know, I know. Sounds like I’m working for The Body Shop, right? I’m not. They don’t even know about this post yet. I wouldn’t write this if I wasn’t inspired, I promise. Meghan and I spent two hours at the boutique on Saturday not only getting makeovers and sipping on coconut water, but asking questions and learning about these amazing products and the people behind the brand. We loved every minute.

beauty loves

I had hoped to have this done before the new year, but better late than never, right? Last December I told you about the beauty products from 2011 I was either lusting, loving or leaving behind. Perhaps because I got married this year and took extra care, I’m pretty content with my current daily beauty routine, so this time around I’m going to share with you just the loves from 2012. So here goes.

1. Cetaphil Restoraderm vs. Aveeno Ultra-Calming lotion. This one is an exception. I’m a loyal Aveeno Ultra Calming lotion user. I’ve switched a few times to see what else is out there but I’ve always gone back. It reduces redness and leaves me feeling fresh, calm and clean. It’s truly one-of-a-kind. But with a history of dermatitis/rosacea, I find Cetaphil Restoraderm is the best solution for breakouts and winter irritation.
2. Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage. One little dab of this miracle combo and that pesky pimple is no more. Trust me. It’s the best concealer out there.
3. Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Color in Paradis. Remember this one? I wore it on my wedding day. I adore the color and it lasts for hours, especially with the matching lip pencil (in Rose Corail).
4. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer. I use this in matte to prep my lids before applying eyeshadow. It’s the best formula I’ve found that holds your eye makeup in place the entire day. I use a little under the eyes, too, to combat bags and dark circles.
5. NARS Deep Throat. I currently do not own another blush color. This is my every day, every night, every every. I love it!
6. NARS Lip Gloss in Chihuahua. The first lip gloss that stays without that icky sticky feeling and doesn’t taste so bad either. I don’t leave home without it.
7. Dove Go Sleeveless. Say goodbye to razor burn! I’m not kidding. From my face to my toes, my skin is extremely sensitive and for the last 30 years I’ve failed at finding a solution to irritation caused by shaving. Until now. Finally!
8. Stila Sun Bronzing Powder in Shade 1. A matte bronzer is a must for my year-round beauty routine. It’s more natural than most and doesn’t leave me feeling orange-y and fake.
9. Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Foundation in 1.2. Last year I told you how much I loved Make Up Forever’s foundation. I was wrong. I am a huge fan of MUF, but my wedding makeup artist convinced me to rethink the foundation. This Smashbox foundation lasts my entire work day, doesn’t gleam under the flashbulbs and provides complete coverage even on my worst days.
10. Make Up Forever Smoky Lash. For fuller lashes, look no further. I bought this for my sister over Christmas and now she’s a convert. Two coats for voluptuous lashes!
11. Anastasia Brow Wiz in Caramel. If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only bring two items from my cosmetics bag, this brow pencil would be one of them (yes, I realize that’s ridiculous). The fine tip retractable pencil allows me to very carefully fill in the gaps and an attached spooley brush is super convenient. It’s amazing the difference a little brow pencil can make.

Just so you know, no one paid me for this review. I just thought I’d share my experiences for those of you on the hunt for great beauty buys. I hope you found it helpful!

how-to: 1920s finger waves

I’m going to start the week with a bit of a teaser. Over the weekend my girlfriend Susan hosted a Roaring Twenties party to celebrate the last year of her 20s — costumes required. I have lots of great photos to share (including my complete outfit), but that post is set for later this week. In the meantime, here’s a look at how I transformed my very un-20s-like long hair into flowing finger waves, thanks to an on-the-fly consultation via picture message with my stylist, Tim Nork, of DNA Salon. Yea I know, he’s the best ever.

Supplies:
1/4 to 1/2 inch curling iron
LOTS of hairspray
brush, not comb
headband

Step 1:
Part your hair dramatically off to one side. Wrap small sections of hair around the curling iron and hold horizontally for 30-35 seconds (my hair is really thick). Repeat in sections around your whole head. Spray each section with hair spray before and after curling.

Step 2:
When you look like curly sue, give it a few more squirts of hairspray, then use a brush, not a comb to brush through the curls gently.

Step 3:
Add a headband (I wore the one from my wedding) and make sure it wraps around your ears, not your forehead — I tried that and looked more like a hippy than a flapper.

Step 4:
Add bright red lips, pearls, a smoky eye and Voila! 1920s finger waves!

lip service

I am on the hunt for the perfect wedding lipstick. Nearly every week I buy a new color. From Revlon to Chanel, glosses to stains, reds to oranges, I’ve tried it all. Of course, it’s all just a big excuse for me to indulge in lots of new lip colors! I’ve mixed colors — the YSL and Hourglass stains look awesome together and last forever, but turned out a little too raspberry-ish for the big day. I’ve invested in lip liner, which really does make the color stay longer. And I learned a new trick — warm water + soft toothbrush = the perfect lip exfoliant. So far my top three are: Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour in Paradis, Estée Lauder Pure Color in Blushing and YSL Rouge Pur Couture – Vernis a Levres’ Glossy Stain in Rose Vinyl (all pictured below). Check out all my new colors and stay tuned for the winner as the big day approaches!

1. Estée Lauder Pure Color in Blushing
2. Revlon Super Lustrous in Coralberry
3. Revlon Moon Drops in Blase Apricot
4. Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour in Paradis
5. Revlon Super Lustrous in Love That Red
6. Topshop in All About Me
7. NARS in Jungle Red
8. Shiseido Perfect Rouge Glowing Matte in PK 224 Sugarbabes

orange crush

I’ve never really been one for looking like a bright pumpkin, but for some reason I’ve been drawn to orange lately. Little, fun, orangey touches, like Essie’s Clambake polish, Revlon Moon Drops lipstick in Blase Apricot, and this J.Crew orange enamel necklace. Orange in moderation.
